Here's how the system works in the simplest terms I can manage it.
Each day for six days (July 31 through August 1), on the Pottermore main page, there will be a clue. That clue will direct you to a website that will contain the magic quill. You have to find the quill on the website, and that will lead you to the registration page.
Updated: It looks like the registration time is getting later and later every day. Keep an eye on the insider blog to see a range of times the clue will be posted.
Updated: It looks like the registration time is getting later and later every day. Keep an eye on the insider blog to see a range of times the clue will be posted.
Things we know:
- The clue each day will most likely be a number, and it has been a math problem. For instance, the clue this morning was something like "In what chapter of The Chamber of Secrets did Professor McGonagall cancel the quidditch match against Hufflepuff? Times that number by 16." (I may have got part of that clue wrong, it was 3 am when I read it and solved it).
- Once you have this magic number, you enter it in at the end of the website http://quill.pottermore.com/. Remember, this CHANGES EVERY DAY. So, last night the website was http://quill.pottermore.com/588, or something like that.
- This next part was most confusing to me. It brought me to the Warner Brother's website for the Harry Potter movies. At this point, I was thinking, why am I here? Where is my registration page? Then, I saw the magic quill. You know you have the wrong number if it brings you back to the main Pottermore page. If it redirects you to a whole new page, look out for that magic quill.
- Once you have found the magic quill, you will be brought to the registration page. Check and double check your registration information (name, email address, etc.)
- There is a question at the very end that asks how many of the books and movies you've read and seen. Rumor has it that if you click that you haven't seen or read any of the movies or books, you will not make it on the list and you will be called a muggle.
- Once you have completed your registration, you will get something that looks like this:
- Then, you pick your username from several options that are auto generated for you. For instance, mine is JinxAuror2. I didn't make this name up, and it was the best of the ones they had for me.
- Wait for your confirmation email. Mine came very quickly after registration. The link is only good for 48 hours, so make sure you open in quickly.
- The registration is generally open for two hours. The servers have not been crashing, so if you are on the site right when the clue comes up, there is a good chance that you'll get on just fine.
What we don't know:
- We don't know what time the clues go live. If you follow the hashtag #pottermore on twitter, you will notice that people will CLAIM to know when the clues are going to be up. They are liars. And meanies. They don't know. The Pottermore insider blog may be your best source for the possible times it will go up.
- We don't know when you'll get to actually USE the site. This first step is only for registration. Beta invitations will be coming out in the following weeks. So, watch your email inbox.
- And, most of all, we still don't know what Pottermore IS. Is it worth staying up until 3 am to get in early? I have no idea. I guess we'll all find out in a few weeks.
You are welcome to ask any questions you may have in the comments. I can't promise that I'll have all the answers, but I'll try.
Are you going to stay up tonight for a shot? Or will you wait until October? Did you already get your beta registration?

Whoooaa, I think I will have to wait until October. I can't stay up because than I can wake up on time to work LOL Also, I don't think I could pass those test / clues!
ReplyDeleteI registered early and honestly, I don't mind whatever its going to be. :) The problem might come because of the INTENSE hype. And I bet there are tons of people there who are expecting something grand like an MMORPG similar to WoW or The Star Wars online world. :P
ReplyDeleteGaby, the questions will be easier each day. And honestly, within 30 seconds, the answers were on twitter. Not hard at all. :)
ReplyDeleteLorenzo, while I'd LOVE To see a MMORPG, it looks like that's not the case. It will be VERY interesting to see what it ends up being. I just really like being first.
So we don't know exact times, but will they all be that outrageously early?
ReplyDeleteAccording to the blog on the Pottermore website they're staggering the release times to attempt to make it as fair as possible to everyone in all time zones so I don't think staying up all night will be necessary the entire time. WIth that said, I'm interested in finding out more about Pottermore, and it would be pretty neat to see it early, but at the same time, my head won't explode if I don't see it until October.
ReplyDeleteHi, Emily.
ReplyDeleteGREAT summation of the Pottermore process as we know it thusfar!! Nicely done. And congrats for your diligence in getting in.
Thanks for helping to spread the word so ALL the true fans can find their way in.
And Gaby, and anyone else who thinks they can't or won't get in, THINK POSITIVELY! You CAN do it. And if you're a Potthead, a real fan, you SHOULD, otherwise in a week or two or three, when Twitter #Pottermore is buzzing with everyone sharing their experiences from INSIDE Pottermore, if you're not inside with all the rest of us, you'll totally be kicking yourself.
So hang in there. The clues are going to get easier in the next 4 days, and at SOME point the Pottermore people SURELY will have a clue at like, 4:00 p.m. PST/ 7:00 p.m. EST, so everyone in the American/US market will enjoy an opportunity.
So hang in there!
Join us!! Be one of the myriad Pottermorons!!!! (I think I coined that term. I dunno. Maybe.)
I got mine last night too! Well, this morning (5 AM here). I'm JinxMidnight130 and I'm so excited!
ReplyDeleteI think registration will be 7 days though (not 6) and they will have 1 question/book. I think at least. Eeek!
I got my registration last night! I'm wondering where the magical quill was hidden on day one because I think it was a different place than day 2. If anyone knows, let me know!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this cleared up A LOT of questions. Now I know to stop listening to those Twitter people who are lying to me!!
ReplyDeleteOh, and CONGRATS on getting in!!
Congrats on getting in. I'm very excited. I stayed up for the first clue.
ReplyDeleteI got on the bandwagon of when the clues were supposed to be released. The Leaky Cauldron said it would be released some time after midnight PDT. It was true, but it was 57 minutes after. Oh well. I don't have to worry about it anymore. ;)
Thanks for all the info! I knew about it but completely missed out on the first two days because I had to do this lame thing called sleeping, even though I did try to stay awake. I hope I can manage to be conscious at some stage during the week. Congrats on getting it done! xo
ReplyDeleteI'm staying up! Hoping to get in, if not, I can try again later.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really intrigued or curious about the Pottermore thingy. Weird I know, but I think I'm Harry Potter worn out. I enjoyed most of the books, and it was fun to wait and wonder for each release, but now I have moved on from the Potter craze.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I'd almost forgotten about Pottermore because it went so long with absolutely nothing there and no clues as to what was going on that I put it out of my mind. Now that there's some stuff to be done, I'm all over it! Thanks for the advice!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the UK and by the time I get home the chance for that day is over. I can't get onto it when it's open.
ReplyDeleteI really want to get on.:D
Thanks for the post though, makes it clearer what we are looking for.
Thanks! I am not sure I will stay up late tonight for a shot as I have to be in line for the library sale at 6:45 am tomorrow (its tradition with some friends)... but Thursday night maybe... I have to try! :)
ReplyDeleteI am working crazy hours right now so there is just no way I can stay up late, but this is a great post and I may forward this to some parents that asked about it.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying every day since it opened with no luck. Actually got to the clue yesterday and then my computer crashed! Today is the day though. I can feel it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this Emily! I'd love to be on Pottermore early, but I am grandma-ish and go to sleep early, haha! However, if they really do release a clue at 4:00 p.m. EST, I'm totally there!

ReplyDeleteI find this website rather useful and they always list the answer fast
I got my clue on day 2 at 5am EST. I catn wait. for this!!!! my user is ChestnutSeeker177
ReplyDeleteIf you don't select any books or movies, you still get in. Just tried it, and my name was on the list. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis site's pretty useful too:

The clues for days 1-3 were supposed to be hard, but the clues for days 4-6 are supposed to be easy. In fact, for day 6 (just today), the clue was so easy you could easily Google it. Also, the times when the clues will be released differ each day so as to give chances to other people of different time zones.
Tip: the final clue (Day 7) will be released between 12:30am and 3:00am BST on Saturday 6 August.
