So, you go to your google reader, and unsubscribe. The end.
Then, a few weeks later, you recognize the posts manifesting themselves again. You think, "I unsubscribed from that, I swear I did." But, you do it again, thinking you must have been mistaken.
They pop up again.
I'm going to show you how to once and for all get rid of the phantom blogs.
First, I will tell you that in the future, don't click the GFC button. It's a fair-weather friend, and it will be going away on WP blogs very soon. Instead, use the little radio icon in the address bar. Or find the RSS feed icon on the blog. (If they are a blogger worth their salt, they'll have lots of ways for you to subscribe).
Unsubscribing from Google Friend Connect
The first way I'll show you will work whether or not you have your own blog, but you will have to actually visit the offending blog in order to unsubscribe. Unlike just unsubscribing from the blog through the easy Google Reader way.
So, head on over to the blog that you want to unsubscribe from. In this example, I'm using Squeaky Books. This is an extreme example, because I would never want to willingly unsubscribe from her blog.
Then click Site Settings. This will open up a pop-up menu.
The magic button you are looking for is Stop following this site. Click it, and the blog will be removed from your following list.
And, now that you're here, I would also suggest taking a look at the Sites you've joined link on the left hand side. If you click on that, it will allow you to unfollow any other sites you may have joined that you no longer want.
So, go try it out. (preferably not on my blog). Report back and tell me how it feels to be free!

I was never that fond of GFC to start with. A quick and handy way to follow blogs, sure, but with so many blogs not being hosted on sies that support it, I found it ultimately easier to just grab a URL and plug it into Google Reader instead. Still a subscription and I don't miss any posts, without the hassle of having many different lists of blogs scattered all over the place.
ReplyDeleteIt meant I had to miss out on contests sometimes, since even though I subscribed to some that way the contest would require me to specifically follow through GFC, but that was no skin off my back, really.
Thank you so much for this post. I've been unwillingly following one blog for months now and now matter what I do, the posts still pop up ion my reader. So thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI've had a long-winded love/hate relationship with GFC that has been leaning more and more towards the hate side of thing lately. I spent HOURS cleaning out my Google Reader because of all my happy clicking! Now I use RSS feeds, because it's so much easier to delete those than having to go through and stop following every site! And when I have more than 200-300 blogs I'm following, I tend to get overwhelmed and I don't comment on any of them!
ReplyDeleteI was so annoyed when I first realized those blogs were coming back; now that we're talking about this, I realize that I need to clear out my google reader. I have almost 600 blogs...obviously way too many to be able to read and interact with!
ReplyDeleteI've actually never had a problem with this. If I would have known others did, I would have spoken up before. I just always go to Google Reader and from a random post, I click "Blogger Dashboard" at the top. I then stop following the blog from there and also unsubscribe from reader. One way of doing it without having to go to the blog, but it looks like they both work. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, that explains why I could never successfully unsubscribe from blogs! Thanks for the helpful hints! Now I need to wrestle my reader under control, as I follow waaaay too many blogs! :o
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember that frustration!
ReplyDeleteOf not being able to unsubscribe and being like WHY IS THIS BLOG SHOWING UP DO NOT WANT TO READ ANOTHER MEME/CONTEST/HOP.
Then, yeah I happened upon the steps you mention, but it's definitely a huge pain as opposed to being able to do it all at once while you are in settings.
SO YAY FOR SUBSCRIBING VIA RSS.
And your awesome helpful post :-D
I'm doing a complete sweep of my reading and deleting everything, then adding ones back in and some new ones. This'll help!
ReplyDeleteGFC somehow added me to my own blog's followers, but it's not letting my unsubscribe no matter what I do. :/
