Threaded Comments in Blogger

At long last the great day has come where we have threaded comments in Blogger. I plan to do a lot more replying to readers through this feature. (As it is now, I reply when I can through email to comments).

However, I thought I'd give a little tip to those of you who, like me, have customized templates. I love my design and didn't want to lose it, but I was dying to have threaded comments. First, make sure that you've changed your settings as outlined in this blog post.

If you have all those settings correct, and it's still not working, I've got one more trick for you. First, back up your blog template by going to the new blogger dashboard, clicking Template, and then in the right-hand corner clicking backup/restore. Go ahead and download your template. This way if anything gets really messed up, you can put it back right.

Then, still in the template window, click Edit HTML

It's going to warn you that you shouldn't change anything unless you are super advanced. We won't be changing much, so click Proceed.

Then, click Revert widget templates to default. Save your template, and close.

If you refresh your blog, you should see the reply button in the comments section.

If your blog is seriously messed up from this, you can just upload your template back.  If this doesn't work for you, I've heard that blogger will be putting out a tutorial to do a little more with the HTML to make it work. I expect that will happen in the next day or two. As soon as I see it, I'll link to it here.

EDIT: It looks like my custom signature got deleted when I reset my widgets. If this happens to you, just follow the instructions in this post to get it back. It didn't mess up the comment threading for me after I added it back in.

EDIT: If you want to try your hand at changing the HTML code instead of resetting widgets, you can follow the instructions at this website. I haven't tried them, so I can't guarantee their reliability.

  6. Happy dance! :) Love it! Glad you figured it out for your blog. It makes me laugh at how many more comments our blogs will look like they have, when in reality, we ourselves will be doing half the commenting! Ha.

    I'm passing this on, thanks!

  17. And they make this available a week after I finally made the switch to Disqus?!?! *sighs*

Oh well, I'm glad they finally did, it looks way better!

    1. LOL I made a switch to Disqus last night and it pops up today! It really made me pissed and plus Disqus was crap not importing my comments so I lost a lot of comments from like Disqus and Intense Debate. It really made me made! UGH!

But I'm so happy blogger made the switch!

  18. Thanks for the info ... must check this out on my blog :-)

  19. Thank you so much for this post! I was so bummed when threaded comments didn't work on my blog. Now they do. Yay!

There is one thing...I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this. Whenever I reply now and hit post, 'redirecting' comes up on my blog and then the page 'jumps'. Not a big deal..j/w if it's happening for others too.

    ReplyDelete

    1. OK it just happened when I posted here too. The page totally reloads, redirects and jumps. That didn't happen before.

    2. Yes, it does happen to me. I wonder if it has something to do with the way that it's coded.

    3. I think there are a couple of bugs to iron out. All the time stamps on my blog are wrong since threaded comments were installed, and a few other things on my layout changed place and I can't get them back to where they were. Ooops! I still really like the threaded comments, just hope they get the bugs sorted out!

  20. I was so excited to hear we now had comment threading, but when I went to my Blogger Dashboard, I couldn't even access it! Got an error message--a lengthy one that concluded with "Expect more errors." A day later, I still can't access it! Needless to say, I'm rather disgusted with Blogger right now.

    1. Must just be something buggy with Blogger. Try it in a few hours and I bet it will be up again. I'm sorry!

    2. Hi Emily, no, it wasn't that simple. Usually when I've had a problem with Blogger, I waited a few hours and it was gone! This time, no. On Day Four of this fiasco, I finally got the bright idea to download Google's own browser Chrome and try it. Voila! I could access my blog and my dashboard again, and the threaded comments feature was in place. NOW, the only problem is I can't even comment on someone's (like yours!) Blogger blog without going through the Chrome browser. Couldn't do it on either of my other two browsers. A man with Internet Explorer emailed me that he had tried repeatedly to leave a comment on my blog but couldn't. Wonder how many others there are like him! Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser, so I'm going to be missing a LOT of comments now!

  21. I didn't even know Blogger had added comment threads! Thanks for the info :) I just wish commenters could be automatically notified when I reply. But they aren't, are they?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, they aren't notified. That would be a great feature. But, you can subscribe via email to comments and get an email each time a new one shows up.

  22. Missie, pointed out this post to me and it has been very helpful. Thanks, Emily!

  23. It worked in the sense that I now have the reply and delete options on comments on my blog. But only the delete option works. Nothing happens when I hit reply! :(

    1. Are you using internet explorer? I've been hearing chatter that comments aren't working with internet explorer right now... (I have no idea why!)

    2. I've tried it in chrome and explorer. I can only assume that it has something to do with my template.

  24. There seems to be a lot of us Blogger bloggers who never know there has been a change to Blogger unless something goes wrong! Why do they not notify us when they are rolling out a new feature? If they can't email us (and why shouldn't they be able to do that?), perhaps they could put the word out on Twitter. When I checked their Twitter handle, @Blogger, it had very few tweets and nothing of any significance. Very frustrating!
