Weekend Q&A

I'm opening up this post for questions and answers all weekend. Have a question about book blogging, reviews, stuff I like in books, stuff I don't like, how much I read? Or, ask me about my house, my cute baby (who I seriously need to post a pic of soon), or something else!

I'll answer in the comments through Monday.

  1. Fun! Okay - 3 questions for now:

    1. Are you going to BEA?
    2. What tips do you have for someone going to BEA for the first time?
    3. I'm probably moving to Utah later this year. Not all that excited about it. But husband is from SLC suburbs and refers to Utah as Utah-opia (gag me). What is the best and worst part about living in Utah?

    1. 1. I think I am. I'm not completely sure yet, it will depend on finances after taxes. But, I really hope I can!
      2. Meet as many people as you can. The free books are fun, but my favorite memories are of meeting other bloggers, publicists, and authors. And, just try to stay out of the drama and enjoy yourself.
      3. We'd love to have you in Utah. We've got a GREAT group of bloggers here and have meet-ups a couple times a year (not counting the signings and stuff). But, I can understand the trepidation about moving to Utah. It has its quirks. The best thing about Utah is that there are a lot of friendly people. At least I think so. The worst part about living in Utah is the bone dry cold weather in January and the inversions. The air gets so crummy. But, there is a lot to like about Utah. It'll grow on you.

    2. Utah is a one of the best places if you are an outdoorsy person at all. Tons of really really awesome National Parks. It would be fun to come and be "new" here and see them all again for the first time.

(Sorry Emily, added to your answer!!)

    3. Forget going the first time! Some of them (like arches) I've never been to at all!

    4. Arches is my favorite and I can never get enough of that one anyway. It's amazing.

    5. Alison, don't worry SLC is great I moved here from Ca. I'm not LDS and know lots of people who have begrudgingly moved here for one reason or another and grown to love it. There are some great independent restaurants. It's a very easy place to live.

    6. Thanks for the positive Utah remarks. As much as I complain about it, there are things that I'm really looking forward to if I move to Utah. I love the book and blogging community. For a city of its size, SLC gets a huge number of YA authors who come visit. I'm thinking it's because there are so many LDS YA authors (and non LDS YA authors in SLC) as well as more adult YA readers. But that's my guess. And there are lots of bloggers. One of my fav things about SLC is The King's English. Well, that and the Gateway mall (plus the new H&M at the mall in Murray!). I'm excited to see how downtown looks now that things are re-opening. I do have lots of friends who live in SLC or Provo, so that will be nice - as opposed to Sacramento where, with the exception of Julie and my yoga/book club friends and my husband's work colleagues, I know no one. Plus I ended up in a rather dud ward (IMO), so I've been lonely here. But enough complaining. Thanks for the advice!

  2. Okay

    1. Are you going to have another Child ?
    2. What was the best book of 2011 for you ?
    3. Are you enjoying being a homeowner ??
    4. I have @alisoncan read and she is awesome...I did do a stint in Utah while I as young --so not a Utah person. But whats the best thing to visit besides Mormon stuff ??

  3. 1. Yes. I will have at least 1 more. I'm not sure when yet though. Lots of factors in that decision.
    2. Best book of 2011 was Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima. It's a part of the Seven Realms Series, and I ADORE it.
    3. I like being a homeowner. It's definitely an adjustment. We're responsible for everything. And I still feel guilty for ripping out the bathroom. Weird, I know.
    4. Best thing to visit in Utah would be the National Parks. They are GORGEOUS, and they are really close. Second to that would be our beautiful libraries. Salt Lake's library and the Provo library are both incredibly ornate and cool in their own ways.

    1. You know, my blog designer did it. I've tried to replicate it, but haven't been able to yet. I'm still working on learning how to do that with html code..

  6. Okay, mine is kind of random, but something that is very on my mind. I saw on Twitter that you work while you have a young child so my question is -- how did you find good daycare that you trust? And how old was your little girl when you started putting her in daycare? The whole idea makes me nervous but it is going to be necessary for me to put my kids in daycare too, and probably pretty young, so I need insights!

    1. I went back to work after 8 weeks. For the next few months, I had family watch her. At least until they all got jobs or couldn't do it anymore. Then, at about 7 months old, I got a recommendation from a friend for a lady in a neighboring city. She was AMAZING. She had a couple of other kids she watched in her house. We did an interview with her, and really felt good about the situation. She was there until this November when we moved. Now my sister-in-law is watching her until we can find someone else in this area. It is so hard to find someone that you really trust. I'm very fortunate to have family in the area to help out as needed.

  7. Thanks for answering my questions!!
    Here's another one:
When you started requesting advertising space, how long was it before you actually got someone seeking to advertise on your blog? About how much are you getting per month?
Also, have you selected the option to Monotize on Blogger settings?

    1. I've done very little as far as advertising on my blog. I do a little with amazon associates, and barnes and noble. And the only other ads that I have are through google. I haven't received anything through Google yet, you have to have a $100 threshold to be paid. Crazy, huh? After 3 years I haven't even made $100 through it. But, as time goes on, I want to expand my advertising a little more.

  8. Mine are kind of random, too. What are you reading now/recently finished?
Do you have any funny stories about your daughter? :)

    1. I just finished The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe. It reminded me a lot of Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. But, I liked LAWKI a little better.

Funny stories about my daughter... She loves Tangled. Watches it like twice a day. She especially loves the part where they are singing in the Snuggly Duckling about dreams. At the very end they all say, "Yay!" and clap. And she says YAY too and claps along with them. It's really hilarious. She also loves dogs and if I say dog or puppy, she barks and pants.

  9. Final question. I think opening the blog up to questions was such a cool idea. Do you mind if I steal it sometime? I'd give you a shout out for credit.

    1. Go for it! It's really not my idea, I know a lot of bloggers that do it, so no need to worry about credit or anything.
