Blogger Confidential: Quitting Blogging

Have you ever been faced with an issue while reading or blogging and thought: I wonder what other bloggers think about this? No matter what genre or audience you blog for, we all face the same problems. Are you a publisher or author wondering what goes on in a blogger's (and by extension a reader's) head?

Blogger confidential is a series of 9 questions asked to 10 bloggers about the nitty gritty details of blogging. Everything from what prompts a blogger to pick up a book, to what happens when a book doesn't live up to its hype. This series was inspired by Wastepaper Prose's Author Insight series. Learn more about the Blogger Confidential series on its main page.

Have you ever thought about quitting blogging? What's kept you doing it?

Sash and Em
"We've never really considered quitting blogging. We don't stress ourselves out about anything, whether it's posting every day or getting a certain number of books read. We're very low-key people and just do things at our own pace that way we still enjoy it." Sash and Em from Sash and Em a Tale of Two Bookies

Book Soulmates
"Not actually quitting, but we did take a 6 month hiatus last year. As much as we love blogging, it is a lot of work and it's easy to get burned out so we both needed a break to focus on some personal stuff. In the end, it's our love of books, reading, and the friendships we've made that keep us going!" Vanessa and Isalys from Book Soulmates

Bites
"It's been a fleeting thought before but never anything more than that. When it has been there it wasn't for any other reason that "I don't wanna do it anymore!" followed by a pouty face, a foot stomp and fisty-punches. But I get over it and keep blogging because I love it. It keeps me on top of the publishing world and keeps me reading some damn good books." Donna from Bites

The Reading Fever
"I actually just considered this about three months ago. I was having a hard time keeping up with my posts, and felt like I was really letting my readers down, so I considered quitting. I stayed because I realized that no one appreciates books (and my opinions about them) like all of my readers and book blogging friends, and I didn’t want to lose those great relationships. I’m out of the slump now, and am so glad I didn’t give in!" Penelope from The Reading Fever

"Yes, quite often actually. When there's a book I'm dying to read and can't because I have a pile of review ones, or when there's a blogging drama involving me, or simply when I'm so busy that blogging becomes one more thing to do. But then I remember how many great books and friends and opportunities I've encountered because of blogging, or that I love to read the comments on my reviews, or how awesome it is that people actually care what I think and it makes it ALL worth it." Sabrina at YA Bliss

Parajunkee
"Yes. I began getting a lot of negative responses from my nine-to-five. My director was very into the "monitor employees social media" style of management. I had to question if my blogging/freelance was more important than my "job". It was." Rachel from Parajunkee

Forever Young Adult
"Sure, there are nights when I'd rather re-watch an episode of Friday Night Lights for the fifth time while drinking a glass of wine. But we created FYA to build a community, and it has been so exciting to see that community grow over the past few years. So even when a book doesn't inspire us to write, our readers always do." Sarah from Forever Young Adult

Chachic's Book Nook
"There are times when I get tired of blogging but I’ve never considered quitting. I enjoy chatting about books way too much for me to quit. And I don’t have real life friends who are willing to listen to me go on and on about the books that I read. I keep reminding myself not to be pressured by the blog and to just find a pace that I’m comfortable with – I don’t have to review all of the books that I read and I think it’s okay for the blog to be quiet from time to time." Chachic from Chachic's Book Nook

Mundie Moms
"I haven't, though I've always said that the moment I stop having fun with it is the moment I walk away from it. For me this is fun. I enjoy reading and I love spreading the word about books. If I don't enjoy doing that, than there's no sense in me continuing what I do. Blogging is my little break from everything else that I have going on around me. Though I have enjoyed taking a day or two off every now and then." Katie from Mundie Moms

"I've considered giving up blogging several times, mainly because of real life conflicts that prevent me from being as active as I want to. However, I find that whenever I spend more than a week or two away from the book blogosphere, I really miss it. I go on the brief hiatus every once in awhile, but I don't see myself giving it up permanently any time in the near future!" Natalie from Mindful Musings

  1. Great post! When my personal life gets hectic, and blogging feels like I job, I might take a step back, but it doesn't last long. I enjoy blogging, and connecting to other readers. It seems I'm in good company!

    1. I have been known to take breaks from time to time too. And there definitely isn't a problem with that!

  2. This is sweet. Blogging can be stressful. I haven't considered quitting, even though my progress has been slow. I take so much satisfaction it in it, even just for myself. I may not get all of the ARCs, but I love every one I do get. I love every comment so much, even though I don't get many. Those things keep me so happy.

Just in case that ARC comment might be misunderstood, I'm not in it just for the free books. I mean, obviously they can be a nice perk and I do like them, especially since I prefer trade paperbacks to hardbacks. However, what I like best about them isn't so much the free as the fact that a publisher or author thought I was worthy of having it. There's no better feeling than being told your reviews are so good that they specifically want your review.

  3. This was a great question because as bloggers, we've ALL been there and can appreciate when one of us needs to step back for a bit. There are times when blogging feels like a job and that's our cue to take a breather!

    1. I think the community is really forgiving if we need to take a break. There is a lot going on in our lives, and it's important to keep it fun.

  4. I don't think I've ever considered quitting, but I have thought about taking a break for a couple of weeks. I know I love blogging, and yes a lot of work but I love it. I love meeting all the amazing bloggers, and wonderful authors.. I don't think I could walk away from it.

  5. Very good question and answers. I can see why bloggers would need a break becasue of schools or jobs. Especially now when tests are around the corner. i just remenber the main reason I blog is to recomend/talk books and explain my opinions, and read comments so i keep going.
its a nice break from reality.

  6. I've definitely felt stressed before with kids/work/grad school, but it always comes back to my love of reading. I usually ask myself why I'm stressed about blogging and 99% of the time it has nothing to do with books and more about followers/stats/drama. That's when taking a step back helps me. This was a great question!

    1. Kate, that is the gospel truth. When I get burned out, it's because I'm heaping too much on myself. Because, I loved to read before I made my blog, and I still love to read now!

  8. This post made me feel so much better! I had to take a 3 month hiatus last yr (in my first year of blogging) and I was really considering just giving it up. But the thing that kept me was that I really do LOVE talking about books- and I didn't want to give that up just because I had to take a break from it. Blogging has introduced me to so many books and people that I love so much! I can't imagine actually giving it up any time soon!

    1. I've taken a few months off from time to time. We had some serious health problems in our family, as well as busy with work and a baby. But, I'm always going to come back.

  9. I have actually recently thought about this... because it's starting to feel a little like work. I started blogging because I love to read and now that I'm blogging I find myself not being able to read the books I want because I am drowning in my Review pile. Don't get me wrong I love to review books but when I am on a deadline I tend to be slower than when I just read for enjoyment... I will not stop blogging because I love it! I have met so many great Authors, Blogging Friends, and Readers! I love my readers and try my best to do everything I can to make my content good and consistent for them :) I stay up really late even when I have school to make sure everything is done. I guess I just hate the stressing part about reading review books and then all of them pile up and I feel like I'm never going to get them finished lol! This is a great post thank you so much for putting this out there :) Glad to know I'm not the only person who has felt this way!

  10. Great post Em ! This is my first time seeing this series. While I understand taking you blog seriously is important I don't think it should become a second job. It would stress you out and make you quit.

I think having a blog is the only thing keeping me sane

  11. I quit blogging. It does take up a lot of time and apparently I was just very bad at it. It is pretty hard to stay motivated when you're getting nothing from the people reading the posts. I think of it as a skill that some people have and others like myself don't.

  12. Wow, I love every single one of these bloggers and I'm very happy none of them actually quit.
It does get hard sometimes and a lot of it is about politics, which is not very good at all, but like Chachic, I love it too much to just quit.
    Wonderful post!

    1. Sometimes if I purchase a book or get it from the library, I don't review it. I just read it for the fun of it. That has really helped me.

  19. Excellent discussion! I've actually considered quitting several times, but wind up missing the blogosphere after a few days. What helps is that I'm not on a set posting schedule, so if life gets in the way and I don't post for a few days, it's okay. Glad to know I'm not alone!

  21. Great discussion! I'm back on my blog after a one-year-break. A the time, I wasn't sure if I was just taking a break or really stopping it all.

I stopped blogging mainly because of personal reasons (I was going through some tough times, but now everything's great again!). And also because I couldn't keep up with the blog like I wanted to. Suddenly, blogging became a pressure whereas, before, it had always felt like fun.

When a few weeks passed, I realized that I would be back at some point, may it be three months or two years! I missed the book blogging community so much! But I'm glad for having taken this looong break: I appreciate coming back even more, and I don't see my blog exactly the same way. Back to fun!

It was really interesting reading all your opinions! Thank you!

  23. I certainly considered quitting after my first year, I was stressed and it was a lot of work. Then I realized that it's not a job, if I only do 3 posts a week, so be it. If I don't read every single unsolicited review book I receive, so be it. That change in looking at blogging as something more fun and also taking breaks when I need too definitely help :) HOORAY for the bloggers who have never considered quitting, they are clearly more level-headed than I!

  24. I already came to the realization that I'm going to have to quit eventually -- it doesn't seem fair to become a publicist for a company and review books from other companies, does it? Conflict of interest and all that. That will be a sad day, but I'm mentally prepared for it.

  25. Honestly... I think about it sometimes. I keep losing followers... like 1 a week instead of gaining them. And I am not sure why... I try to keep things interesting and entertaining at my blog. Then I remember that I am not totally writing it for other people but for my self!!
