Nightspell by Leah Cypess: Review

Nightspell
By: Leah Cypess

Darri is on a mission to save her sister. Two years ago, Callie was bethrothed to the prince of the dead, and it just never sat well with Darri. Now Darri and Varis (her brother) are going to bring Callie home, and Darri will be betrothed instead. What Darri doesn't expect is that Callie is hostile towards her siblings and doesn't want to leave.

Like Mistwood, Nightspell has a captivating and imaginative plot line! I love Leah's settings and stories. And Nightspell was not a disappointment. The entire atmosphere was eerie and dark.

In addition to the setting the characters are surprising. One of the interesting things about Ghostland is that the ghosts are semi-corporeal beings that can shift from being solid to being invisible. So, it is difficult to tell who is living and who is dead. Mixed with a few other interesting tidbits about the world that I won't give away because I don't want to spoil anything for you, is a complex tangle of plot points and characters.

While I loved the setting and plot, the characters didn't ever sink in for me. I think part of the problem was that there was a shift in perspective from Darri to Varis to Callie, and it wasn't clear who you were reading when. I don't mind multiple perspectives, but I definitely need it spelled out who I'm reading.

But overall, I really enjoyed Nightspell. I think that Cypess has an amazing imagination, and I can't wait to read what she's got coming next.
