Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivan: Audio Review

Burn for Burn
by: Jenny Han, Siobhan Vivian
narrated by: Joy Osmanski, Madeleine Maby, Rebekkah Ross

I took a gamble on Burn for Burn. I'm really not into the revenge thing in books, and reading about rich, privileged teens kind of makes me ill. But, Jenny Han is hilarious, and I was intrigued just enough to give it a shot on audio. The basic premise is that Kat, Lillia and Mary are an unlikely trio thrust together because of their desire for revenge. Some of their reasons are more noble or understandable than others, but they hatch a plan to bring down the popular kids in a big way.

Audio Review: The narrators were fantastic. I liked having three different readers for the three different perspectives. This kept everything straight in my mind much better than had I read the print version. Each narrator did a fantastic job of channeling their character through their voice. My only complaint was that the production quality wasn't always fantastic. There was a faint echo at times that was a little weird, but not overly distracting.

Book Review: Did my gamble pay off? Mostly. I have to admit that I was lured into placing CD after CD into my car and read the book all the way through to the end, because I just had to see how it was all going to shake out. I liked Mary, Kat and even Lillia (in that order). And I even liked the very subtle supernatural twist. Also, I'm just putting this out there... are these girls Furies?..

I think it was Lillia's story that kind of caused me to not really love this novel. And it wasn't even her. It was the fact that she had something incredibly traumatic happen to her, and nothing happened with it. It's talked about, allude to, and finally spelled out. But, in the end, I was left wholly unfulfilled. Honestly, the book just ended on a kinda cliffhanger sans tension. I know that there will be sequels, but still. The pacing was just all wrong, and while it wasn't a dealbreaker, I'm not sure that it's hooked me to go into the rest of the series.

However, if you're really into these kind of novels and not just a reluctant dabbler like I am, you'll probably have a totally different experience. Let me know if you check this out.

Profanity: Heavy (a few uses of the "f" word)
Sexuality: Moderate to Heavy
Drug and Alcohol: Moderate
Violence: Mild

  1. 3 narrators? Awesome. That's very cool. I love multi cast audios.

I turned this one down 'cause I like you don't really do young revenge stories.

    1. The three narrators were definitely the best part. I haven't decided if I'm going to continue the series or not, but like I said, it was a gamble.
