Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price--and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone...
A convict with a thirst for revenge.
A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager.
A runaway with a privileged past.
A spy known as the Wraith.
A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.
A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.
Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction--if they don't kill each other first.

Here’s the thing. I think Leigh Bardugo’s world building is brilliant. Her world is as much a character as any person or creature. That is definitely the case with Six of Crows. All the things I loved about Shadow and Bone are here.

But, I was a mixture of bored and confused for the first 2/3 of the novel.

It had the elements of a fantastic book, and in a few ways, it delivered. There’s a fantastic heist plot, a bunch of very broken people and a leader that makes them a family.

Things that didn’t work:

  • It took too long to get to the actual heist. I got way more backstory than I wanted, and I kept wanting to get to the real action.
  • Not enough character development. I couldn’t keep the characters straight, and I couldn’t remember who was on which side.

I think that readers who were completely invested in the Shadow and Bone series are going to like this newest book from Bardugo. It has enough elements from her first series and enough of a twist to give fans exactly what they want.

The last third was fantastic. It was perfectly paced, I finally figured out who was who, and I felt invested. But, I probably would not have finished were it not for the fact that I enjoyed her other books. And, I’m not sure if I’ll continue the series with all the other things I have to read.
